Here are some facts about the health benefits of wine that will change the way you view an already-so-familiar drink today.

5. The color of red wine comes from the skin of the grapes:
It’s the compound called anthocyanin, which is abundant in grape skins, that gives red wine its color.


6. The longer the wine, the lighter the color will be:
The color of red wine will become lighter as the wine ages. Aged bottles of wine will be pale in color and slightly clear.

7. Nearly all red wine bottles are made from one grape variety:
All popular red wines, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, and Pinot Noir belong to one grape variety: Vitis vinifera. There are of course other grapes used to make wine (about 65-70 other varieties of Vitis), but these are rare and often uncommon local varieties. Vitis vinifera is widely recognized as the grape variety born to make wine.

A hint: Vitis vinifera does not come from France, but it comes from Eastern Europe.

8. Red wine comes before white wine:
The yellow and green-skinned grapes used to make white wines have been shown to be genetically modified from red grapes. The proof is that Pinot Noir and Pinot Blanc grapes share a similar set of DNA.
